FLINT MINE
|
Southold Indian MuseumAlgonquian Flint Mine The Southold Indian Museum owns the Algonquin Flint Mines at Coxsackie, New York. This is one of the few sites of its kind left in safe hands. The site is over sixty three acres in size and contains many of the quarries used by the American Indian. Paleo hunters used this area as a source of flint over seven thousand years ago. The museum obtained this site from its owners with funding donated by Mr. Frank Husing, a member of Southold Indian Museum in 1960. Through the efforts of Ms. Mable P. Smith, Flint Mine Hill was put on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1978.
